Pistol Fundamentals - Part I - THE GRIP

Ever wonder why some people shoot really good and others do not?

What makes them fast and accurate while others struggle just to hit the target no matter how much time they have?

It straight up all starts with proper fundamentals.

Practice is a necessity to get better, but if you practice without having solid fundamentals...you will waste a TON of ammo.

One of the pillars of pistol fundamentals is your grip.  An improper grip can and will cause you a lot of problems:

  • it will be harder to get a smooth and straight back trigger pull
  • slower target and sight acquisition
  • difficulty managing recoil, resulting in sloppy follow up shots
  • slower draw time
  • more movement in your sights
  • less accuracy

Check out these pictures and details below.  Let's start building your fundamentals!  It all starts with the grip.

Start by making a "V" with your strong hand.  Grab the pistol as high on the back strap as possible.

Close your hand (except for trigger finger) around the grip with a firm handshake amount of pressure.

Line up the knuckles on your weak hand with the knuckles on your strong hand and rest your palm in the open space on the grip.

Lightly rest your thumbs on the top of the frame, right under the slide and apply a firm handshake grip with your weak hand also.  You want to have equal grip pressure with both hands.

I've created a quick tutorial for proper grip to get you started.

Now that you've learned more about grip, grab your pistol and start practicing!

If you are used to the tea cup or some other kind of grip it may take you a while to get comfortable with this grip but once you do, you will tap into the ability to control the gun like you never have before!

All of the best professional shooters in the world along with law enforcement and military use this grip or a grip style very, very close to this.  Practice at home with your UNLOADED AND CLEARED gun, dry fire with this grip, get used to it and then head to the range and go hot!
